Ancestral objects are the highlight of itemization in Diablo IV

Ancestral objects are the highlight of itemization in Diablo IV. Rare and coveted, they allow even the most powerful players to improve their equipment in a colossal way and thus reach the pinnacle of their power in the game.

After greatly evolving in Diablo IV and reaching around level 70, many activities are accessible to players. Among this plethora of content of all kinds, we obviously find the central point of the entire Blizzard franchise for years: to get better equipment. And if the most basic objects are quite simple to operate, there is a type that is not necessarily very intuitive and obviously reminiscent of Sacred objects. We are of course talking about the ancestral objects that we reveal in detail in this guide.

What is an Ancestral item in Diablo 4?

The main feature of so-called "Ancestral" objects is that they are not linked to a specific color. Their operation is exactly the same as that of the Sacred objects of World Level 3 but concerns the next level.

Where Rare objects are represented in yellow and Legendary objects in orange for example, this is not the case for Ancestral objects that appear simply as an additional affix added to a given object. Their icon will also shine with a white halo. Because yes, any item obtained in Diablo IV can be an Ancestral item, regardless of its level of rarity.

Ancestral objects have the following specificities:

  • Random affixes: each copy of an Ancestral item has completely random characteristics just like most other items in the game. The system is the same as that of Sacred items

  • More powerful than average: the main particularity of an Ancestral object is that it is obviously more powerful than a non-Ancestral object. For example, if you get the Serpentine Wand in the Ancestral version, then it will necessarily have better statistics than its basic version.

  • Dedicated to certain items: Only Rare (yellow), Legendary (orange) and Unique (gold) items can be Ancestral. Lower quality items are not eligible for this affix

  • An average level of 750: As Ancestral items are obtained in the higher difficulties of the game, their item level is often very interesting for an item that obtains it. To take our example, the Serpentine Wand is level 500 base, 643 in Holy but is level 800 in its Ancestral version!

  • Not Sacred, Only Ancestral: A Sacred object cannot be Ancestral, and vice versa. Either you have a "basic" or Sacred or Ancestral version, the two affixes cannot be combined on the same item

To put it simply, an Ancestral item is simply one of the best possible versions of a Rare, Legendary or Unique item, and they could not be bought with Diablo 4 gold. This is the type of item you will covet the most eventually, when all your gear is already of a very high level and you are trying to tackle the ultimate difficulty of the game: Torment. This is the most reliable way to improve your equipment in the long run.

How to get Ancestral items in Diablo 4?

As we indicated previously and like Sacred objects, obtaining Ancestral objects requires fulfilling certain conditions: Ancestral objects can only be obtained in World Level 4, not before.

To access this fourth level of play, you must:

  • Complete the entire Diablo IV campaign

  • Complete the boundary stone dungeon "Cathedral of Light" in World Tier 2 to access World Tier 3

  • Complete the boundary stone dungeon "Temple of the Fallen" in World Tier 3

Once in World Level 4, it is no longer very difficult to obtain ancestral items. You can even buy them at merchants, or via the Curiosity Seller, for Obols. But the best ways to obtain an ancestral item are: Complete Dungeons of the Nightmare, Favors of the Tree of Whispers, and most importantly, open Mystery Chests during the Infernal Waves.

The rest is just a matter of farm and luck. Good luck in your quest for the most powerful Ancestral items, there is work to be done and it is a goal that you should aim for in the long term more than anything else!
